A piece of history
The Wairarapa Racing Club was officially formed on the 21st of April 1864. For ten years the club held meetings in other parts of the Wairarapa and in 1874 shifted to its current location at Tauherenikau.
Work began on the Tauherenikau Racecourse in 1866 and was completed in 1874, with the first meeting being held at Tauherenikau on January 26th/27th, 1874. The first buildings were erected in 1892 with the building of a Grandstand, Weighing Room, Stewards Room, 4 boxes and 8 stalls.
Recently we celebrated 150 years of racing at Tauherenikau with a special commemorative race meeting and function.
If you have any detail on the history of Tauherenikau we would love to see it, so please get in touch using the details on the contact page, and help us keep our history alive.
